What is in the name Kikkalur…
What is in the name KIKKALUR? There is no uniformity of spelling in official records – starting from Village, Panchayat Union, Taluk, District, State, National, Revenue and elsewhere – it is seen written as KIKKALUR / KEEKALUR / KEEKKALUR / KEEKKALORE. KEEKALORE,.. Should we not fix the spelling be uniform? So, referencing the judiciary certified documents of DoB & marriage of parents and also ours (the siblings; descriptor – site admin) as PROOF-1 and the spelling Postal Department consistently uses, from Britishers days, as PROOF-2 we chose the spelling “KIKKALUR”. To put in practice, first we placed KIKKALUR on the World Wide Web. We trust this may be taken as the firm spelling for official use in any Documents and Records of the Village created from July 2009 December -2017. We have also included KIKKALUR Village in the WIKIPEDIA under the topic “Villages of Tamilnadu”. Perhaps ours is the first and only village go on web space. Hence, it is a model village. Motivated by our initiatives, some of the villages now create domain names and web space for them. Interestingly, it is for information, we found there is a KIKKALUR near ‘Yosemite National Park’ in America (USA).
Kikkalur is a Model Village. Number of educated & employed are highest than any village in surround, presently 250+ children going to schools outside the village (for English medium and above 8th standard), well informed people, culture & traditional values, four lakes to irrigate about 350 acres when full, two primary and one high schools, village politics… are some of the prime factors support this. Kikkalur demographically situated in Tiruvannamalai District, Tamilnadu, India.
Many from our village are educated and employed in Government service, private companies, overseas OR self employed professionals, businessmen and many serve in Indian Army. Agriculture is the only source of livelihood for most people. Panta Reddiars, forerunner community as landlords today almost gave up agriculture because of inadequate labour. Inadequate labour has become the hurdle for anyone who depend on them for agriculture or home maintenance etc. Still the village remains atop in food production. May be it is commercial crop like sugarcane, chilies, vegetables, cotton etc. yield better revenue but still the paddy cultivation is predominant. Observation and memory goes back to 1950s to put across this vital information that a modest change is fast happening in the village. A Step for one to see it is a model village in terms of growth.
