History of Kikkalur
“Listened from elderly people, that Kikkalur was called as KIL KILAIYUR and the neighbouring village on the west Mekkalur was called MEL KILAIYUR. A huge tree near border line of the villages had two huge trunks among its all; of the two, one towards East and the other towards West. That led people naming the villages – interesting!!! In due course the names shortened…
It is to believe that according to some artifacts findings from some lands situated south of the Kikkalur-Mekkalur road (that lands location is known as VENGALA MEDU), scripts on walls of Siva Temple and scholarly old people finding, there lived the South Indian Jains and the village then was known as “VADA MADHALAMPOONDI”. In further; the Jain people had houses on eastern side and just in front of Siva Temple. The stone Dhvajasthambam now stands has scripts written about it. And believed that they lived conspicuously rich (The very people used to tell this fact by asong – that they had vast area lands, covering three wells, house sites close to now Perumal Koil Street and more – a mother singing it to the child to sleep.
Chola Kings said to have built the Temples in the Village. We see SCRIPTS on the stone walls of Perumal Koil (Temple) and as well Siva Temple. There is a stone plates covered cave in Siva Temple and saivite priests and aged people were telling us that probably was the deep and long cave way to the then ruling king take a sportive expedition to Gingee fort. Believable true? May be!!! Someone officially from archeological department of India can explore and publish the findings.”
